Atlantic58 are delighted to welcome Vicky to the team as the new Graduate Ecologist (peatland and vegetation). The role, part funded by the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), will support our expanding peatland restoration and monitoring efforts across the Western Isles.

Peatlands are vital ecosystems, playing a crucial role in biodiversity provision, carbon storage and water regulation. Their restoration is now a national priority as part of Scotland’s environmental goals, supported by Government initiatives such as PeatlandACTION. This is particularly relevant in the Western Isles where peatland covers nearly three quarters of the land surface, representing the second largest expanse of blanket bog in the UK.

Kathleen Stewart from HIE Innse Gall said, “We’re pleased to support Atlantic58 in creating this new graduate role which combines the opportunity to develop new talent with vital work on peatland restoration. Investment in this area not only helps safeguard the environment but also supports the sustainable development of our communities as we make a just transition to net zero. It is through opportunities like this that we can develop the next generation of talent, while building a resilient and sustainable local economy.”

In addition to peatland related work, Vicky will support ecological projects, contributing to technical reports, vegetation and habitat fieldwork and analysing spatial data in QGIS.
