Peatlands dominate much of the Highlands and Islands and are a defining feature of the Western Isles landscape, supporting biodiversity, water regulation and carbon storage. Historic drainage, modification and land use have reduced the ecological and physical function of many peatland areas, while development proposals involving peat excavation require careful consideration of impacts, reuse and long-term management.
Peatland work focuses on avoiding adverse effects where possible and, where appropriate, restoring peatland habitats to a more natural condition. Activity is informed by recognised guidance and centres on proportionate assessment, practical design and regulatory compliance across development, restoration and land management contexts.
Peatland services are designed to support planning applications, restoration funding bids and wider peatland management objectives, including collaborative projects with local contractors and PeatlandACTION.
