Environmental / Ecological Consultant (All Levels)
Atlantic58 is a small but rapidly growing consultancy based in the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. We provide a range of professional environmental consultancy services, focusing on projects within the unique social, cultural, and ecological environment of the Western Isles. Clients range from local community development trusts to global multinationals and cover a wide variety of sectors including the space sector, renewables, aquaculture, and crofting.
A position is now available for an Environmental / Ecological Consultant. All levels will be considered from graduate to senior level to support our diverse range of locally based projects across the onshore and offshore environment. The Consultant will be responsible for general environmental consultancy support in addition to developing their own specialisms in relation to their expertise. Our preference is for applicants to have an existing skillset relating to vegetation survey and / or peatland survey, restoration and management, however, any applicant with a strong ecological or environmental skillset will be considered.
The Role
The role can be tailored for a range of consultant levels from graduate to senior level; it is highly diverse and requires a self-motivated candidate with the capacity to learn quickly. Work may include feasibility projects, survey / site work, collating and inputting into Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) chapters and supporting other projects as required. The ability to write reports to a high quality is essential. Training opportunities to provide personal and professional development are available and encouraged. As a small business, there are significant opportunities for involvement across a range of sectors and projects, as well as aspects relating to wider business operations and development.
The role may have a client facing element, and tasks are likely to include the following:
Core Responsibilities
Undertake a range of environmental / ecological survey work requirements and develop additional skills to support wider survey / project requirements;
Contribute to and, where appropriate, take ownership of day-to-day project work to support projects including reporting, analysis and interpretation of environmental information;
Lead or coordinate projects to defined budgets and timescales;
Use QGIS to generate maps, maintaining an accurate recording system and filing convention;
Contribute to business development, business management and marketing activities as required;
Develop personal and professional competencies with a relevant trade association e.g. IEMA or CIEEM.
Undertake training to develop skills across a range of disciplines across ecological survey techniques, QGIS / mapping, Environmental Impact Assessment, and general continual professional development.
The Location
Offices are currently located within the UHI Outer Hebrides campus at Stornoway, however, hybrid and remote working options are available.
Essential
The candidate will hold a relevant degree.
Proven ecological / environmental survey and reporting experience to a high standard.
Excellent communication, IT and report writing skills with high levels of attention to detail.
Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines and adapt to a range of project requirements.
A full UK driving licence and ability to travel.
Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
Desirable
Experience in vegetation survey or peatland survey, restoration or management. Candidates with strong evidence of other relevant ecological or environmental skills and experience will also be considered.
Postgraduate qualifications.
Knowledge / experience of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.
Competent in data analysis and mapping (e.g., GIS).
The candidate will have or be willing to work towards a professional membership e.g. CIEEM or IEMA.
Knowledge or interest in the Western Isles or other Scottish islands, and the unique challenges of island living.
Salary and benefits
The opportunity is open to a wide variety of consultancy levels and is based on a full-time contract at 35 hours per week. Part time options will be considered for highly experienced candidates. The salary is negotiable dependant on experience and level.
Permanent or fixed term contract option on agreement.
Hybrid working at home options are supported. Potential remote working arrangements (on agreement).
